THE SHOW!

Some LGBTQ people like to garden. Some like to dance. Others like to fly airplanes, draw, paint, run, fish, hunt, read, act, sing, bowl or build sheds. Some LGBTQ people are astronauts. Some are firefighters, grocers, contractors, activists, plumbers, students, musicians, policy makers, bakers, writers, accountants or zookeepers.

You know gay people. You know trans people. You know bi people and lesbian people. You might just not know that you know them. You know?

Out and About introduces you to your LGBTQ friends, neighbors and allies through their stories, their art, their creations and their work.

The world seems to have become more divisive and angry. Lies are often embraced for a fleeting comfort. Join me, Captain Maeve, for Out and About every Tuesday at 4 pm. Fueled by truth, unity and good cheer, we’ll set a course for inclusion and hope.

If you’re out, what are you about? Let’s thrive together.

Show Playlists

I had a fun conversation with Spokane burlesque performers Miss MastiKate, Ravenna Moon and Muffy Manslayer. They were on Out and About to talk about this Saturday’s burlesque show – Witch Hunt. All proceeds from this “underground” event are going to organizations that help immigrants and victims of spousal abuse in our region. Sixteen performers […] […]
I had a conversation with Trevor Finchamp about Forest to Frame. Taking place on May 16th, from 10 am to 4 pm at Finch Arboretum, this festival will feature artists working outside to create works that will later be auctioned off to benefit the Spokane Art School. If you enjoyed Brush on the Bluff, you […] […]
I had a conversation with Kelly Adams, co-chair of the Spokane Democratic Socialists of America. I learned a lot and found out that the DSA is not a political party! We had a very fun discussion about politics and talked about what people can do to make a difference during these dark times. Kelly had […] […]
I talked with Tracy Simmons. Tracy is the Executive Director of FāVS – a website that reports on religion and ethics in Washington. She is also an award-winning journalist specializing in religion reporting, digital entrepreneurship and social journalism. And in between all of that, she is an Associate Professor at Washington State University, as well […] […]
I had a fun conversation with my friend and fellow Spokane Fire Department retiree Ty Bruner. Retirement is a great time to refocus and retool for new things that you will help bring into the world. Ty’s story is no exception. He took all those interviewing skills that he had employed in the fire department […] […]
I talked with Cricket Green from Sew She Can. This nonprofit that Cricket founded teaches marginalized women, including refugees and victims of domestic abuse, not only how to sew, but how to translate this skill into making a living. We talked about how she became involved in this endeavor, the social and political aspects of […] […]
I had Sloan Poe from Identity and Maggie McGuire from Trans Spokane on air to talk about Transgender Day of Visibility, all the planned observances. We also talked about the persecutions that trans people have been facing, lately, from Fascist politicians. If you missed the show, here is a link – https://archive.kyrs.org/mp3/kyrs_260331_160000b.mp3 As always, thank you […] […]
I had Sami Perry, from Spokane Indivisible, on the show to talk about Saturday’s No Kings Protest. This is only in 4 more days. There were 13,000 people here in Spokane that attended the October No Kings. Since then we’ve had more destruction of our democracy, kidnapping heads of state, more turning our backs on […] […]
Yesterday on Out and About, I played some Irish music that spanned the decades, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. In between songs, I talked about the social messages behind the music, some of the history of Irish social movements and how those movements came to America, largely in the IWW and in a religion […] […]
We raised $712 for KYRS! I was on the air for two hours, playing music and talking until I was quite hoarse! Thank you very much to all who donated. I feel like KYRS is such an important tool for keeping the fading ember of democracy alive. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! If you […] […]
