We are continuing to experience extended periods of dangerously high heat in central and eastern Washington, and north Idaho. Continuing high temperatures will make it difficult to control the buildup of heat in homes without air conditioning.

This unprecedented heat not only threatens the health of residents in the Inland Northwest, but makes our region increasingly vulnerable to wildfires and intensifies the impacts on our ongoing drought.

All of us at KYRS remind you:

Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Hot cars kill. Never leave kids, older people or pets in cars. The temperature inside a parked car can double within minutes.

Keep cool. Seek out air-conditioned buildings such as shopping centers, libraries, cinemas or community centers when possible, draw your blinds, use a fan, take cool showers and dress in light and loose clothing.

Plan ahead. Schedule activities in the coolest part of the day and avoid exercising in the heat. If you must go out, wear a hat and sunscreen and take water with you.

Check in on others. Look after those most at risk in the heat – your neighbor living alone, the elderly, the young, people with a medical condition and don’t forget your pets.

Block out the sun at home during the day by closing curtains and blinds.

Cancel or postpone outings. If you absolutely must go out, stay in the shade and take plenty of water with you.

Stay tuned to KYRS for updates on this situation, stay out of the sun, and check up on your relatives and neighbors.
