This week, we sit down with three women entrepreneurs working together from across the globe to run a fair trade business and non-profit designed to uplift Nepali communities. Featured guest Denise Atwood co-founded and has been managing local fair trade company Ganesh Himal Trading since 1984, while the company’s sister non-profit organization Conscious Connections Foundation operates on the ground in small communities in rural Nepal to help women take charge of their reproductive health. On the show, we discuss how fair trade differs from conventional capitalist trade models, and how fair trade can benefit communities on the production side of global trade while providing affordable products to consumers, but switching to this model on a large scale would require us to rethink our shopping habits. We also discuss how women in Nepal are reforming their role in traditional culture by gaining and spreading education about their reproductive health with support from Conscious Connections Foundation.
