The speech from Vladamir Putin to the UN together with his interview on 60 Minutes are examined as rhetoric to the world and critique of the US. In particular, key parts of the 60 Minutes interview that were redacted before airing are explored. Putin’s eloquence in explaining the historical and contemporary events of the USSR and Russia was surprising for many Americans who seemed to view it as elaborate propaganda. Still, Putin’s forthright and clear rebuttals of US propaganda about Ukraine and other issues presented a cogent counterpoint to the new-conservative line.

Michael Hudson’s analysis of Obama’s UN address was also discussed, especially concerning the Orwellian rhetoric and the bellicose threats to the world. Hudson remarks that Obama doubled down on the exclusivist definition of the US: “When an American president uses the word “democracy,” he means a pro-American country following U.S. neoliberal policies, no matter if the country is a military dictatorship or its government was brought in by a coup(euphemized as a Color Revolution) as in Georgia or Ukraine. “
