Playlist for Show: Long Waves

In the context of the Brazil Olympics, I explore the extent to which the facade of entertainment and national pride in spectacular events draws us away from meaningful understandings of contemporary events and politics.From the Great game of the early 1800’s to Brezinski’s Great Chessboard, Empires of the West have always depended on well-chosen lies, racism, and exceptionalism to hide the genocide, torture and theft of the European empires and now the American empire. Whether Trump’s “Make America great again” or HRC’s “America is the exceptional nation,” such lies establish ways in which individual worth is conflated with national worth, and so empires continue…until they don’t.
