Over the last ten years in Spokane County, whether or not to build a new jail has been a contentious issue. Overcrowding has caused leaders to seek better and more facilities, but on a national level, many are reconsidering the efficacy and morality of incarceration as it currently functions as it disproportionately affects people of color, those who are poor, and women. Many who enter the system, enter it again or have difficulty re-entering society. In Spokane, the issue is also become more complex because of the recent deaths of inmates over the last few years, 8 just in 2018, and the most recent occurring June 12th. Last week, Community members and organizations spoke out against building another Jail in Spokane County.
