According to the Seattle Times, a group of whale watching tour companies is suing activists who are working for stricter regulations for boat caused noise pollution in the Puget Sound. This initiative would require ships to be 650 yards away from the endangered Southern Resident Orcas to better protect them from noise that interferes with their hunting and communication, and is one of the three main threats to their recovery.
According to a 2019 report by the nonprofit, Earth Economics, the whale watching industry in the Puget Sound Area, supporting over $216 million worth of economic activity and generating more than $12 million in state and local tax revenue annually. It also supports over 1,800 jobs.
