Hundreds of public schools jobs are at risk in Eastern Washington following the state’s budget takeover and pay raises last year. Changes to funding is a result of the McCleary decision and a summer long negotiation over school budget. The Spokane Public Schools board is expected to adopt a resolution that could result in layoffs at the beginning of the next school year. They cited a potential budget shortfall of millions of dollars.
The West Valley School District says that unless changes are made to the funding model, they will need to cut over 40 full and part time positions. These would mostly be employees without a teaching certifications, such as lunch personnel and janitors.

Spokane city council has decided to toss out the law requiring helmets to be used on bikes and scooters from the bikeshare program. Scooters will still not be allowed on sidewalks downtown but helmets are no longer a requirement for people who rented through the mobile app. City council president Ben Stuckart admitted to not wearing a helmet when riding the electric scooters. Sgt. John Griffin of the Spokane Police said that officers stopped over 1500 riders for not wearing a helmet. Out of all those 1500, 36 individuals were ticketed and the rest left with a warning. Griffin said with no helmet law in place, officers may not stop any rider as opposed to just ones who rented via app. City Councilman Breean Beggs said that the fact that these scooters contain technology that limits speed within certain areas such as the park, sets them apart from traditional bikes.
Every council member except Mike Fagan voted in favor of the proposal.
