Liberty Lake Regional Park will receive a $12 million dollar upgrade when the plans are finalized by county officials according to the Spokesman-Review.

A month ago, the Spokane County parks department created a new master plan to improve the park in five phases over the next few decades. The south end of the park will be the focus and include upgrades to the campground and beach, environmental learning center, pedestrian bridges, and more.
Paul Knowles special project manager for the Spokane County Parks, Recreation and Golf department stated quote, “Everybody is going to reap some benefits from these enhancements. People love the natural setting out there with the lakes and forest … They really wanted to see the master plan balance that with upgrades to the park.”

The master plan has not been updated since 1972 and after conducting a community survey over five months last year, it was determined community members wanted improved amenities.

Spokane will fill 30 U.S. Border Patrol agent positions at it’s reopened station located on Newport Hwy according to the Spokesman-Review.

The station is reopening due to agents traveling from other stations to Spokane and not due to an increase in immigration to the area or arrests according to a statement by Bill Kingsford, Operations Officer for the U.S. Border Patrol. It is anticipated the agents will cover about 308 miles of the Canadian border.

The station closed ten years ago since most of the agents transferred or retired and the agency always had the intention of reopening the location.

Also, at least 8 to 10 patrol cars will be purchased for the station and the building may be expanded based on needs.

Elsewhere in the state, companion bills in Congress aim to increase oversight and put a moratorium on the additional construction of immigration detention centers. Eric Tegethoff of the Washington News Service has more.
