This episode explores some of the scientific advances that were made in the 1950s. The 1950s saw the world’s first computer, the invention of the programming language FORTRAN, fiber optics, reshaping our world and the way we communicate. TV was also popularized in the early 50s as was “convenient” food, such as the heavily processed fast food and TV dinners. These two inventions combined has lead to a drastic change in the social habits of Americans, as well as their overall health. Medically, the 50s saw the discovery of the double helix form of DNA and introduced the world to a Polio vaccine which would forever change the health of people around the world. This is part one of a 2 part series.
