I examine the American tendency since Regan to divide the world into polar opposites of good and evil. This leads to a world in which psychological projections cloud strategic and international policy and thought. This is especially prominent in the characterization of ISIS, and, in that case, it has a tendency to render all actions undertaken against the “evil” being fought justifiable and positive. Demonization and pejorations of various enemies leads further to actions that are not made rationally, sanely or morally. In so doing the US replaces reality with myth. The greatest peril is that this sort of thought leads to destabilization of the world political systems and brings the entire world closer to a much larger war.
