Our guests were Spokane citizen, taxpayer, and homeless advocate Tom Robinson; and Creighton James Welch, SOS-Spokane’s Special Correspondent on Homelessness. Discussion centered on transitional homeless villages, and whether such a village might work here in Spokane. Tom’s compiled list of myths vs. facts concerning homelessness got our conversation going. Creighton explained how and why homelessness itself is a full-time job, his personal experiences with homeless shelters, how he will be reaching out to unsheltered folks in Spokane County, conducting both a needs survey, while chronicling their personal stories for broadcast on this program. Tom explained the substantial differences between transitional villages and shantytowns. The many economic, public safety, environmental, and social benefits accrued by any community sponsoring such transitional villages were also highlighted. A pair of Facebook sites, OFF THE GROUND and HOMELESS IN SPOKANE were described and recommended.
