To paraphrase Nobel Prize winner Sinclair Lewis, it is happening here. Today we explored the genesis of Fascism, and a fraction of the degree to which Fascism has taken root in today’s America. Beginning with the OED’s definition of this authoritarian phenomenon as well as a few of it’s earliest expressions, we next turned to both its history and expressions in contemporary Trump America. Amongst persons discussed and/or quoted on this subject were General Smedley Butler and his role in uncovering 1933’s Business Plot designed to overthrow FDR, Umberto Eco’s 1995 essay examining 14 characteristics of fascism, Howard Zinn, Noam Chomsky, David Talbot’s The Devil’s Chessboard, Laurence Britt, and noted author and scholar Henry A. Giroux.
