Sam Mace, Inland North Director of Save Our Wild Salmon, a national coalition of organizations devoted to wild salmon was today’s in-studio guest. We discussed issues critical to the survival and renewal of wild salmon in the Pacific Northwest. Topics included how removal of four dams along the Lower Snake River would greatly benefit not just wild salmon, but all life—people and other animals, plants, soils, the air, and even insect life. Tribal treaty rights and the central role salmon play in Northwest Indian culture and diet were highlighted, along with the success of the Elwha River dam removals. The negative-to-devastating effects of fish farming, mining, dredging, logging, farm runoff, industry, hatchery fish, river transportation, and the sometimes convoluted politics of salmon protection and promoting their renewal were likewise discussed.
