Our conversation with executive director Marijke Fakasiieiki and board chairman and Amina Fields of Refugee Connections Spokane focused on timely and critical issues facing 30,000-plus refugees, immigrants, and asylum-seekers who’ve chosen Spokane seeking a better life. We discussed Amina’s own journey from Vietnam to the states, and then through law school, as well as Marijke’s family legacy of progressive activism. Refugee Connections Spokane‘s support of youth, the elderly, and working adults was highlighted, noting ongoing programs benefitting recent arrivals, the unique challenges they face, and how we might assist their assimilation, even as they give back and recharge our Spokane community.
