Mike Hastie is a writer, photographer, activist, a school presenter, veteran of the Vietnam War, and a member of the organization Veterans For Peace in Portland, Oregon. We discussed Mike’s conservative military upbringing on various bases around the world, how and why he enlisted, and his political evolution into opposing the United States’ machinery of war. Mike focused in on his activism following revelations of the My Lai Massacre in what was then South Vietnam, on his recent visit to the nuclear bomb memorial in Hiroshima, Japan, and how those most responsible for wars are also those who personally benefit from them, while sheltering their family members from participating in dangers they support and precipitate.
