Today’s guest, Rich Lang, is the District Superintendent Pacific Northwest Conference of The United Methodist ChurchSeaTac Missional District. During his tenure locally, Rich founded the Shalom Zone and Dining With Dignity, the Spokane outreach to poor and homeless folks. We discussed the many gains by minorities in the recent elections, the inevitable changes demographic shifts will bring about and the the authoritarian rigidity of the right. We also touched on election reform, corporate Democrats vs. Progressives, our cultural civil war, rural vs. urban, economic inequities; and the plight of capitalism, racism, and fear of the Other. Republicans turning overtly to fascism and their attempts to consolidate power were examined.
The remainder of the program was devoted to examining our nation’s long trending toward Christian Fascism, and what these theocratic forces bode for the future. Rich spoke of both Bush Jr. and Donald Trump’s theocratic Dominionist inner circles, the Evangelical right’s “Rambo Jesus”, and Rich’s own story of how the nature of his early family life enticed him into Fundamentalism, and how his story exemplifies the allure and desire for stability right wing Christian fascism holds for many folks.
