Spokane City Councilwoman and progressive homeless advocate Kate Burke addressed issues relating to homelessness here in the city as well as fielding listener phone-ins. We discussed our current homeless situation leading into winter, the city’s Five Year Strategic Plan, expressed needs and desires of homeless folks themselves, this week’s city council decision to make city properties available to developers, low income housing purchase assistance, tactical approaches to working through homelessness, community priorities and how politicians serve their constituents, the power of emailing the powers that are in order to effect change, HUD Secretary Ben Carson’s proposed EnVision Center here in Spokane, the social safety net, transitional villages, the criminalization of homelessness and community court, funding streams, and citizen attitudes concerning their homeless neighbors.
