I begin the show with the premise that most of what passes for journalism is stenography, i.e. journalists writing down and reporting on what they are told by those in power. Many prominent journalists fail to investigate the matters they report on (though there are exceptions such as Seymor Hersh, Glen Greenwald, Matt Taibi, John Pilger, and others).
This model of journalism in detrimental to the well-being of the nation and its citizens in that it tends more toward coercion than informing. Thus, news and information do more to preserve power through repeated ideas and sound bites that through sheer repetition are finally taken as truth, both by the populace and by the leaders themselves.
