Playlist for Show: Long Waves

This show explores the ideas of Guy Debord in their current manifestation. These are discussed at some length with readings from his books.  Reality isn’t what it used to be. Twenty-five percent of Louisiana Republicans believe that Obama was responsible for the botched Katrina cleanup. Most do not believe in ACD.

Yet human relations are be formed by media, by the spectacle of the media. Reality doesn’t matter if the lie is repeated often enough and with enough gravitas. Thus, the lingering racism and sexism in the US become amplified in the words of Trump and his campaign. Identity politics is an easy card to play, and Trump plays it often. Thus, divisions within society are manufactured in real social relationships of individual persons and groups. This is inherently destructive of democracy and historically leads to fascism.

Numerous examples are presented and explored.
