Today’s show explores the effect of domestic propaganda and “fake news” on the memories and so the future understandings of the the US citizens. The systematic distortion of news and information creates a world in which no one can say for sure what is true and what is a lie. As Hannah Arendt observed: “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the dedicated communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.” In the US, dangerous memories, i.e. those challenging the government’s official version of events, are systematically eliminated through a variety of mechanisms. The nation of Colombia is cited as a country still possessing its memory. The writings of Henry Giroux on dangerous memories are cited and discussed.
