The show opens with a discussion of “Present Shock:” that state where everything seems to happen at once. Specifically, we have come to live in a world where we have no time to process and integrate our experiences. Further, the immediacy of our world inhibits being able to consider larger time frames, the frame of a lifetime, of a tribe or family’s span, a nation, a species, a planet. Yet focusing on different time frames allows us to consider the ramification of acts not in terms of their long term effects.
This inability to see larger time frames affects the US approach to wars and warfare. Generational war, commonly spoken about by the military planners, has been unthinkable since tribes gave up blood feuds and these are now the future. Trapped in a tiny present, we cannot imagine a vast future.
