Beginning with reflections on our regional and national heroes, including George Wright and Andrew Jackson, I observe that we continue to ignore or whitewash our long national tendency to ignore genocide, lawlessness, and brutality as fundamental aspects of our national historical culture. In its place we have a culture of distraction and pleasing lies about ourselves to help us retain our ignorance of our nation and of our selves. Believing only what we know of ourselves consciously, we believe ourselves innocent and compound stupidity with iniquity.
Thus we are easy victims of rulers who deploy ideologically neo-liberal falsehoods in a strategy of “Realpolitik” which triumph over all human and social values. As we saw in Katrina and Sandy, poor people are not worthy of being saved. Indeed, if everything is reduced to markets and financial values, there is no social good offered by the poor.
These ideas extend to Iraq and other wars where destruction of entire civilizations is quite acceptable. Numerous examples of current acts of US destruction are discussed, focusing especially on Libya and Syria.
