The Spokane Reservation Equitable Compensation Act passed the U.S. Senate in late June and will now move on to the House. The bill was sponsored by U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murrey and has been in discussion for years in many different versions, often passing either the Senate, or the House, but not both at the same time according to Cantwell ini 2018.
The bill seeks to compensate the Spokane Tribe for loss of tribal land, and resources after the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam in 1940 which provides a significant amount of electricity.
