When people think of glass arts in contemporary context, the colorful work of Dale Chihuly comes immediately to mind, especially for art patrons in the Northwest. In the MAC’s exhibit, entitled Luminous, Chihuly’s wild, looping, chandeliers, and sculptures are a prominent feature in the collection, including one of his most important chandeliers, the Laguna Murano Chandelier. But there are also 33 other artists in the gallery- some well-known- some less so. One featured artist I’ve only just been introduced to is French-born, Nadege Degentez, who now lives and teaches in Australia. The glass exhibit, Luminous, will be on display at the Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane, from now until June 23. More information at northwestmuseum.org

Washington state has seen a slight drop in the number of foster children being placed with families, according to a new report. The Annie E. Casey Foundation says the the proportion of kids in foster care who were placed with families rather than in group homes fell from 94-percent in 2007 to 91-percent in 2017. Still, Washington’s rates are higher than the national average, which rose from 81-percent to 86 during the same decade. Annie Blackledge heads The Mockingbird Society, working with foster youth in the state. She says it’s important to keep kids in families, and familiar settings. The report shows children nationwide are more likely to be placed with people related to them, with numbers growing from 25-percent to 32-percent in a decade. Rob Geen with the Casey Foundation says that has been an important development.
