Playlist for Show: SOS-Spokane

Gonzaga Environmental Studies professors Brian Henning and Greg Gordon joined us in a discussion about Inland Northwest environmental challenges. Greg gave a brief climactic regional history from our most recent ice age to present times, emphasizing environmental stewardship practices of Native Peoples compared with latter day white settlers. Brian explained Spokane City Council’s recently passed ordinance to go 100% clean renewable energy by 2030. We then discussed August’s hazardous air, solutions to the “new climactic normal”, the permanent loss of cedar forests, Christian Dominion & science denial, Trump’s anti-environmental policies, capitalism’s commodification of nature, 350 Spokane, rewilding, volunteering for the annual Spokane River Cleanup and Reforest Spokane, Initiative I-1631 Carbon Emissions Fee Measure, Spokane River protections, and finally—holistic approaches to fostering our planet’s environmental health.
