Best Music of 2009
Here's the Best Music of 2009 according to some KYRS DJs. Enjoy! The Unique Experience ![]() Artist: The Meat Puppets Album: Sewn Together "I bought this at the Long Ear in CDA and listened to it on the drive and subsequent stay at my Ocean Shores cabin. I've been a fan of the Meat Puppets for nearly 20 years and they've been together for almost 30. It's pure pop bliss with some seriously sweet, trippy lyrics (along with great harmonies and a floating in space kind of feeling to it). I love it when a band has been together that long, still has tons of appeal and hasn't SOLD OUT. Great album, listened to it 30 times in 10 days and continue to enjoy. WORD."Concrete Rodeo ![]() Artist: Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit Album: Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit "In a year packed with damn fine albums, it was hard for me to pick a favorite (I'm thinking of releases by The Felice Brothers, Scott H Biram, The Supersuckers, Dave Rawlings Machine, Son Volt, Deadstring Brothers, and literally dozens of others), but the one disc I find myself coming back to again and again is the self-titled album by (ex-Drive-By Trucker) Jason Isbell's new band, the 400 Unit. It's less of a cohesive, flowing album than it is simply an amazing collection of songs, but that works perfectly in this context, with Isbell building on his southern-rock roots to add elements from a vast array of influences, from vintage soul to gritty blues to distortion- and sample-laden industrial. All the while, however, an undercurrent of pitch-perfect pop sensibility injects enough catch-in-your-brain hooks to carry the listener along for the long haul. It's an album I'll be playing on the Concrete Rodeo for a long time to come, and one that I'm sure is destined to become not only my favorite album of the year, but one of my favorites... period."Science Radio ![]() Artist: Bibio Album: Ambivalence Avenue "Raising the bar from his first release of 2009, Vignetting the Compost, Bibio breaks new ground with Ambivalence Avenue. The album provides a wider array of music with more shine and clarity than previous records, without straying from his signature sound. Songs such as S'vive, Sugarette, and Fire Ant have new elements of hip-hop and harsh electronic noise, that fit in well at his new found home, Warp Records. Yet, there are still the delicate and melodic songs present that many people listen to Bibio for, in Haikuesque (When She Laughs), Lovers' Carvings or the opening track Ambivalence Avenue. Among Warp veterans Flying Lotus and Boards of Canada, Bibio holds up strong with Ambivalence Avenue."Save the Moon ![]() Artist: Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros Album: Up From Below "Late one evening I found myself watching David Letterman exactly at the moment when Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros made their national debut. My jaw dropped I was so amazed by their energy. I've never experienced an energy so free and full of motion just by watching a band on tv. You can imagine my joy when I saw them in concert and that energy seemed to enter my mind and body ten fold through a beautiful form of osmosis. It was almost a religious moment to witness such chemistry between musicians and their audience."The Edge ![]() Artist: PJ Harvey & John Parish Album: A Man a Woman Walked By "PJ Harvey is one of my favorite artists, and this album didn't disappoint. It's a strong, dark and gritty album. PJ harvey proves herself as one of the great artists of our time."Motion Granted ![]() Artist: The Phenomenal Handclap Band Album: The Phenomenal Handclap Band "Starting with an instrumental that could be lifted from a turn-of-the-1980s cop movie, The Phenomenal Handclap Band spread their cards on the table upfront. The New York octet have no shame about drawing on retro sources with no regard for coolness or lack thereof. Soundtracks, psych-rock, disco... it's all here (sometimes within the same song), resulting in a concoction that's, by turns, atmospheric and in-your-face funky. Anyone who's squeezed the last drops from the Empire of the Sun and MGMT albums ought to give this a try. - Independent.co.uk"Queer Sounds ![]() Artist: Gossip Album: Music for Men Song: Men in Love "Overall the album is nowhere near my favorite Gossip album but I do like this song very much."Queens of Noise ![]() Artist: The Swallows Album: More Than A Mouthful "The Swallows are a local lady punk band!"The Dreadful Show ![]() Artist: Magrudergrind Album: Magrudergrind "Magrudergrind does grindcore with a ferocious and fun energy, infusing basic anthems for the circle pit with politically and socially conscious lyrics that avoid any attempt at pretension. Speed and volume are the primary concerns of this band; Magrudergrind doesn't indulge in musical experimentation, instead battering listeners with ugly, pulverizing tracks that rarely last longer than a minute. This is recreational grindcore at it's most accessible, from a band that has grown into their abilities and provides the auditory equivalent of a swift kick in the head." |
